Until we got there and they saw an entire school bus full of kids unload… then, they weren’t so sure. My kids aren’t particularly shy or unsocialized, but they ARE NOT used to being surrounded by 100 overly excited kids who just got released from a day cooped up in school. But really, who is?
Thankfully, about the same time I was about to pull the plug on our outing, after having to tell two big kids, for the third time, not to climb up the slide while Gage (and several other kids) patiently waited to go down (yes, I am SO THAT MOM… and proud of it! ) my friend Becky and her kiddos, Emily and Jake, showed up and saved the day by inviting us to play at her parents’ own personal ‘park’ in their back yard.
Becky’s parents’ have a beautiful set up that they have built for their grandchildren and for their friends. They generously open their home and yard to us for casual get-togethers, birthday parties, Easter egg hunts and picnics. We simply love this place and those who congregate here…
This is my kind of good time… huge, safe, shaded backyard… good, loving, Christian friends… enough fun stuff to entertain our kiddos for hours…
… and some sweet kiddos to put up with my incessant picture taking.
Our afternoon ended with Kaden needing a nap, but not before a PB&J lunch and a little declaration from Gage to Emily… “Emily, I’m going to marry you because you are the sweetest girl that I know…” and hugs all around.
On the way home, Gage told me that Emily tried to give him a little toy fishy that she (finally) found amongst the strawberry plants… he denied the offer and encouraged her to keep it. When I asked him why he did this, he said it was because he “wanted her to have it more than she wanted him to have it, because he loves her that much. And that is important.” I am SO glad he, at 5, already recognizes this as a critical factor in a relationship!
Who’s teaching this kid?? :)
Now if he could just learn that it is NOT okay to yell “I beat you! I beat you!” at her (or anyone) when he runs faster to their destination… ug… boys…

You just never know about Gage and Emily! I attended the birth 2 weeks ago of a pediatrician and her husband who are both 29 years old. They've been boyfriend/girlfriend since they were 13. I had another couple who met in the first grade, went their separate ways in high school and got back together in college. I'm heading to their house this afternoon to play with their kids while they celebrate 5 years of marriage!
You can do it Gage...only 15 (or so) more years of holding her in your heart :0)
Have a great, sunny weekend and can't wait to see all the fun pictures!
